Typically constructed with a durable, chemical-resistant frame, a fume hood features a sash (movable glass window) that provides visibility and a physical barrier between the user and the experiment. Air is drawn into the hood and either filtered (in ductless fume hoods) or expelled through an external exhaust system (in ducted fume hoods).
